Finale

Pour la troisième année consécutive, la finale offre un duel au couteau avec cette affiche attendue entre les deux premières têtes de série, Smith et Nastase. Comme en 1970 et en 1971, il aura fallu un cinquième set pour que Wimbledon connaisse un vainqueur. Smith, finaliste battu l'année précédente tient sa revanche. Après avoir déjà conquis l'US Open il remporte son deuxième titre en Grand Chelem en moins de 12 mois.
